santorum

I don’t know enough about the Democratic candidates for US Senate to have picked a favorite (I figure I have some time, since the election isn’t until 2006), but it’s clear to me that Santorum needs to go. Here’s one synopsis of why:

Daily Kos :: Definitive Rick Santorum Diary: Your Talking Points

My personal dislike for Santorum is all based on things that I can’t find links for, but you might be able to find your own reasons for disliking him right on his own website. He is, I guess, a pretty typical Bushite, complete with talk about the culture of life, activist judges, and how liberals encourage pedophilia and man on dog action. The normal stuff.

Bob Casey’s the candidate who currently appears in the best position to defeat Santorum. Here’s a list of other announced and potential candidates, some of whom might be more palatable.

I’m pretty much of the “anybody but Santorum” mindset.

  1. I actually can add a little to this. Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell (D) has endorsed state Treasurer Bob Casey, Jr. (D) as the Democratic nominee to challenge Santorum, and Casey looks like the candidate for November. Casey — like Santorum and his father former Pennsylvania Gov. Bob Casey (D) — opposes abortion rights, so he might have a chance to win some of the vote in the rural, Red parts of the state. Santorum is the kind of Republican that forced me to stop being a Republican, and his positions on abortion and other “culture of life” issues are enough for me to want him gone. He’s actually a bit of a nut (some of his greatest hits: “Isn’t that the ultimate homeland security, standing up and defending marriage?” and “I have no problem with homosexuality. I have a problem with homosexual acts”). I’m not certain, though, how much better Casey would be.

And if you are a fan of Santorum, I apologize. Well, actually, maybe you should.

  2. okay then maybe it’ll work if I cut off the top:

  3. Hey. The other candidate in the Democratic primary is Chuck Pennacchio. He is a pro-choice, anti-war, progressive alternative to Bob Casey Jr.

You can find his website at:

Ironically, the entry that you site in your entry above was written by me–and I work for Chuck Pennacchio, focusing on his online outreach. If you can include a link to him, that would be great. Most importantly, please check out his website.

  4. I have very mixed feelings about this issue. Chuck Pennacchio seems like he’s probably more representative of me than Bob Casey, but neither is ideal. I guess maybe my feelings aren’t so mixed — if the perfect candidate were running, I’d support him (or her), but in this case it seems like the choice is between supporting someone who can defeat Santorum, or paying lip service to ideals that are slightly closer to my own but will never have a chance on the Senate floor. I hate to say it, but I have to go with the possibility of defeating Santorum, as long as the replacement is not quite as bad as he is.

Of course, Casey doesn’t have anything about where he stands on the issues on his site (I hope this changes), and I wouldn’t be surprised if I’d have a harder time saying all this if he did.

However, Pennacchio is against vouchers, for farm subsidies, against trade with China (Can anyone seriously call China “Communist” anymore?), and says things like this:

Rather than dismantle and destroy Social Security, we propose to strengthen it, to ensure its solvency even past current projections. Chuck opposes cutting benefits or raising the retirement age to do this, and will fight any attempts to take away the benefits from those who are entitled to them.

The other things aside (and, honestly, I don’t expect better from Casey), I love this bit about Social Security! But I’ll rant about that some other time…
